Chapter 11

There were six people at the party at Ritt’s house. It was in the northern part of the city in a very nice neighborhood. Cam knew only Blake and Dave. She was introduced to Ritt, Shepherd, and Melody. Ritt was about Cam’s age but tall and lanky. Shepherd was older and Melody was barely in her twenties. She was a little heavier than she could have been, but her upbeat personality made up for anything else.

“It’s good to have you here,” she told Cam. “It gets a little stale working with just men.”

“Stale?”

“Yeah. They were fresh with me at first, but that dried up when they found out I was queer,” she explained. She laughed loudly at that.

Cam chuckled. At least this one wasn’t boring.

“That happens. Some men can’t handle that.”

“Oh, I know! You should have seen my boyfriend’s face when I told him.”

“I imagine he must have been quite upset.”

“No! He was ecstatic because he thought we could do a threesome with his other girlfriend!”

“Oh.” Cam was quite amused by this young woman.

“I said he could observe but he couldn’t participate.”

“I see.”

“Here.” Shepherd handed her a thick doobee.

“Where does this come from?” she asked.

“I grow it in my bathroom. It’s pure. No chemicals. No K2. Not like we get from Mexico.”

“Yes,” Cam agreed, taking a small hit of the thick joint. “That South American stuff will send you into next year.”

Then there was a hand on her shoulder. It was Dave. “See? I told you there were other perks.”

“So, I see.”

“Have you eaten?” he asked.

“Not yet.” She smiled at him. “I figure I’ll be hungry later.”

“Take another hit. You’ll be hungry soon enough.” He smiled and walked away.

Ritt, Shepherd, and Blake were in a heated discussion about state politics.

“Want to join us, Cam?” Blake asked her.

“No, I’ll just listen for a few minutes.”

“Tell everyone how you met Ruth!” Dave laughed. “You guys got to hear this. It’s a wonder Cam’s still alive.”

“Oh, it was nothing.” Cam tried to brush it off.

“Ruth found her making out with her woman,” Dave announced.

Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to Cam.

“It really wasn’t my fault,” Cam tried to explain.

“Don’t leave us hanging. Tell us everything.” Blake’s eyes were wide.

Cam breathed deeply. “Well, my first prison job was in the library. I’m fluent in Spanish, so the warden thought I could teach it or English-second-language.”

She thought back to that fateful day.

“This really pretty young woman walked into the library and stood there leaning against the shelves, staring at me. I thought she had beautiful eyes; there must have been something Asian in her background.”

“Yes,” Shep piped in. “That’s what Ruth liked, something exotic.” Everyone agreed with him.

Cam realized that everyone had gathered around.

“‘I hear you were a cop,’” she said to me. I knew this one was going to be trouble. Stay away from her. “‘I did a cop once,’” she announced, “‘Told me if I fucked him, he wouldn’t bust me. Lied. He was a lousy fuck and he busted me anyway.
